The Federal Reserve is adopting the ISO 20022 messaging standard for wire transfers, replacing the current Fedwire Application Interface Manual (FAIM) format. This change enhances global compatibility and streamlines wire processing.
Effective July 14, 2025, all wire transfers must comply with the new ISO 20022 format.
What is ISO 20022?
The Federal Reserve Bank is implementing the ISO 20022 message format for its Fedwire Funds Service, which aims to enhance the efficiency of domestic and cross-border payments. ISO 20022 is a globally recognized messaging standard that many financial institutions already use.

What should you expect on July 14, 2025?
Once the new ISO 20022 format is live, review your creditor details (formerly known as beneficiaries), especially for any recurring wires. Updates to creditor information cannot be made before the transition, so we recommend logging in on July 14 to confirm everything is accurate.
International wires will require extra attention starting July 14 and may need manual adjustments before processing successfully. One key change to note is that a new required field — Town Name (currently referred to as “City”) — must be completed for international wires to process.
